What single-use plastic products are and why it is banned in some states in the U.S

Environmental protection movement is spreading widely and quickly all over the world and it does record remarkable achievements.

Plastic is at the forefront of many conversations in our society more and more these days. Plastic waste produces over 300 million tons every year, so it’s crucial to limit its use.  

There are some states in the U.S have banned single-use plastic hoping it will help reduce plastic waste. And plastic bans are working. A recent study found that plastic bag usage in California was reduced by over 70%. This is great news for the environment!

First, let’s figure out what single-use plastic is.

What is single-use plastic?

Single-use plastic products are ones made of plastic that are only meant to be used once or briefly before being thrown.

Why is single-use plastic banned in some states in the United States?

Plastic production in the United States increased from 25,550,000 tons in 2000 to 35,680,000 tons in 2018, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. A total of 51 million tons of plastic were discarded in 2021, with almost 95% ending up in landfills, oceans, and the atmosphere. In a new study by Greenpeace, only 5% of household plastic waste was recycled. 

Single-use plastic products are inexpensive to manufacture and have found widespread application in various industries. Single-use plastic items are handy and cost-effective, yet it is clear that they are bad for the environment. That’s why finding new solutions to reduce plastic waste must be performed.

What to do to reduce plastic waste?

First, let’s become a conscious consumer. Every time you are trying to buy a plastic product, wonder if it can be recycled or how it will impact the environment. Is it possible to replace it with something more eco-friendly or should you just not buy it at all? 

Choosing biodegradable plastic products is a great solution. Biodegradable plastics are made from renewable biomass sources such as cornstarch, wheat powder, sugarcane etc… that can be completely recycled in specific conditions. 

In addition, replacing single-use products with reusable ones can also be beneficial. Be sure to bring your own takeaway containers, reusable coffee cups, and cutlery set anytime you need them. Whenever possible, reuse single-use items, such as cutlery and chopsticks.
